THE LITTLE ARGONAUT

ISSUE 003 JAN 2023

A note on the cover image: Sister Mary Corita was a seminal pop artist whose social justice work combined the material and the spiritual. Alongside teaching (and nunning) fulltime, her medium was largely silk screen which enabled accessibility of affordable art to the masses. Despite her work being seminal in pop art’s history, her spiritually-informed activism was largely cast to the margins.

Welcome to a new year of The Little Argonaut.

Happy 2023! We are so happy to be back and here to share with you a tantalising line-up for the first month of the year. For many, January is a time for new beginnings: the hubris of gym memberships, reading lists and Headspace re-downloads. However, connecting with others through acts of kindness and collective efforts might be a much more apt take on the “New year new me” concept.

This year, we were inspired by Emma Beddington’s Guardian piece on acts of kindness. From now on, we will make humble suggestions of an act of kindness you can do to spread joy each issue. If resources are not available to you, we entirely understand, we just ask you to send this to someone who might have time or money to spare.

Happy New Year to you all. X

Age UK operates a telephone service, matching volunteers with an older person for a short chat once a week. This small act plays a huge role in forging companionship for some of societies most vulnerable, and as anthropologists, is the perfect way to expand our horizons and knowledge of our communities!
