<image:title>Culture - Camera and Retrospect: or How to Annotate Life - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>1. This first photograph, taken during the 2021 lockdown, is from a virtual ballet rehearsal of my sister, who was kind enough to allow me to photograph her. When Time, as we sensed it (with its schedules, alarms, and calendars), became obsolete, my sister’s online ballet classes were one-hour reminders of the fact that Tuesdays and Thursdays still existed outside of our house. Looking back at this photograph, I now understand why 19th-century Impressionists were constantly painting ballerinas— the stamina and the elegance they exude are utterly transcendental.</image:caption>

<image:title>Culture - Camera and Retrospect: or How to Annotate Life - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>2. Boredom breeds creativity, some say. This is precisely what happened to me when I was having a staring contest with this Venetian mask instead of doing my calculus homework when I was 16. This mask still dares the dwellers of our living room to a staring competition, but I believe I was the only one in our household to take a photograph of it by placing a piece of fake-crystal prism in front of my lens</image:caption>

<image:caption>3. It is not every day that I am genuinely impressed by street musicians, yet I still think about this Austrian duo converting Museumsquartier in Vienna to the set of Alice in Wonderland. I took many photographs during that trip, some of which I am quite satisfied with, but this one remains my favourite because it is a simple reminder of how genuinely fun humankind can be.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Comment - The Intimacy of Self-Censorship in Wartime Russia</image:title>
<image:caption>I was no longer sure where, in a city like Moscow, distraction ended and psychic survival began. I thought of the ghastly riders in Mark Gertler’s ‘Merry-Go-Round’, stuck in a churn of grotesque gaiety and terror. Painted as a condemnation of the First World War, his carousel becomes a metaphor for war’s remorseless machinery, trapping soldiers and civilians alike in an endless cycle of violence (Tate 1988). Ultimately, what the journey offered to me was not clarity, exactly, but a subjectivity disciplined by fear and grief. There is nothing comprehensible about the war. It reorganizes not only the future, but memory, language, and the scale on which feeling itself becomes possible. Sometimes, the only clarity it offers is the bleak one produced by despair. And yet, this despair can act as a powerful form of attunement, compelling you to stay with the fragile traces of care that survive under repression. It may be why confiding in a stranger felt so intimate. For a moment, the unsayable acquired unassuming company, and dissent no longer seemed condemned to remain a private hallucination.</image:caption>

<image:title>Comment - Whose peace, whose history? Reflections from two museum visits in Seoul: the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum and the War Memorial of Korea - While travelling in Seoul on a rainy day, I walked uphill toward the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum. The street was quiet, unlike the crowded, spectacular tourist routes I had followed over the past few days. Following the paintings on the sides of the street, I arrived at a grey brick facade, covered with yellow butterfly notes bearing visitors’ messages of solidarity. Not monumental but intimate, the three-storey house unfolds a painful and long-silenced history of sexual slavery.</image:title>

<image:title>Comment - Whose peace, whose history? Reflections from two museum visits in Seoul: the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum and the War Memorial of Korea - The exhibition begins with a narrow gravel walkway that leads downwards. The crunch of stones underfoot, accompanied by the sound of gunfire, and the closeness of the walls create a bodily sense of confinement, ushering visitors into the halmonis’ suffering. Drawings made by survivors hang along the walls, guiding me deeper into the dimly lit basement where videos of the halmonis’ testimonies are played. In this dark, cramped space, I encountered the halmonis’ voices, their isolation and endurance and the heavy weight of history.</image:title>

<image:title>Comment - Whose peace, whose history? Reflections from two museum visits in Seoul: the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum and the War Memorial of Korea - The Memorial Hall is the most saddening display. Names and dates of death on the bricks commemorate known victims. Victims whose names are unknown are also remembered, represented by black bricks. Hallam and Hockey (2001) argue that people manage relationships with the dead through materiality; memorials “deploy words in the service of a particular conception of memory and its relation to materiality” (171). Visitors do not encounter an abstract category of “comfort women”, but a tangible wall with names engraved that must be faced and walked along. Even for bricks without names, they give physical weight to the invisible deceased, bringing the “absent” present. According to the audio guide, despite its grief, the Memorial Hall is deliberately located at the brightest part of the museum, exposed to sunlight as a symbol of hope. As a site of ongoing relation, the hall makes the deceased halmonis visible and spatially orients the dead toward the living.</image:title>

<image:title>Comment - Whose peace, whose history? Reflections from two museum visits in Seoul: the War and Women’s Human Rights Museum and the War Memorial of Korea - There is also a Memorial Hall. It honours soldiers and policemen killed in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Like the Memorial Hall in the War and Women’s Human Rights, it was quiet. The installations and sculptures titled “the Spirit of the Nation”, “Traces of Patriotism”, and the “Creation” represent the Republic of Korea, the desire for one non-separated nation, and hope despite past destructions. The deaths are sacrifices made for national unity.</image:title>
